The register
Revisions
A codex that is reread must show where its mind moved. This is the register of what changed in an essay after it was first set — a correction, an addition, an instrument — with the date and the reason. An essay’s seal says Revised only when an entry stands here. Changes to the furniture around an essay are not recorded; changes to what it says are.
-
September 2026: The Month the Wall Became a Door
Updated. California’s two most consequential AI bills, which the essay had left on the governor’s desk against his deadline, were signed on 30 September, the last day of his window; the paragraph and its note now say so.
-
Six Books About What Gets Remembered
Corrected. The essay had implied that death in Dungeon Crawler Carl can be retried; in the books it is final. The sentence now says so.
-
Nobody Understands It, and It Has Never Been Wrong
An instrument added. The two-slit figure can now be played: open and close a slit by hand and watch the pattern answer.
-
The Fastest Way to Learn Notes and Scales Is to Stop Memorising Them
An instrument added. The circle of fifths now sounds, muted until a button is pressed.
-
The Mathematics of Music: Why Some Sounds Move Us
An instrument added. The partials figure now sounds: the harmonics can be heard one at a time, muted until a button is pressed.
-
The Tiny Tuning Error Hidden Inside Every Piano
An instrument added. The comma can now be heard: twelve fifths against seven octaves, muted until a button is pressed.
-
Sacred Geometry: The Pattern That Surfaced in Egypt, India, and the Cosmos
An instrument added. The golden-spiral figure can now be turned by hand.
