Does Time Flow, or Do We?

Physics keeps taking time apart—no universal now, laws that run equally backward, no ticking t at the bottom of things. Yet a fly outruns your hand because its moment is finer than yours, and a childhood summer outlasted a decade—two truths that refuse to be one.

A fly is walking the rim of your glass, and you decide, without much malice, to end it. Your hand is moving before you have finished the thought—fast, by any human reckoning. And the fly is gone. It lifted off while your palm was still a hand’s breadth away, banked, and is now cleaning its legs on the ceiling, unbothered. You were not slow. It is simply that, to the fly, your terrible swift hand came down through the air like a slow grey dusk, with all the time in the world to step out from under it. You and the fly shared that second. What you did not share was its length.

Hold on to the fly, because it has to survive a good deal of demolition. Over the next few pages the flow of time—the most obvious fact there is, the very pulse of being alive—gets taken apart by physics with unsettling thoroughness. There turns out to be no universal now, no master clock at the bottom of things, no arrow of time written into the fundamental laws, and in our deepest theories no letter t at all. Examined closely, time keeps not being there. And yet you are ageing, the coffee is going cold, and the fly got clean away. So this is a story with an odd shape. We watch time vanish on the way down, and then find it again on the way back up—not out in the world by itself, but in the meeting of a world and a mind clocking it at a certain speed.

The Now That No One Shares

Begin with the now, since it feels unbreakable. As you read this, an enormous number of things are happening at once—a wave cresting off Portugal, a star quietly running out of hydrogen, a child being born—all of it, surely, in the same slice of reality that holds you. Special relativity says: not so fast. There is no single slice. Take two firecrackers, one ahead of you and one behind, that go off at what you measure as the very same instant. Someone gliding past on a fast train will find, by measurements every bit as honest as yours, that one banged before the other—and a traveller moving the opposite way gets the opposite order. None of you is mistaken. This is the relativity of simultaneity, and it is not a matter of signal delays or sloppy clocks; it is woven into spacetime itself. Each observer cuts the single loaf of reality into nows at a slightly different angle, and no angle is the right one. What a clock records is only its own private path through spacetime—its proper time—never time as such.

Follow that to its cold end. If your now leans one way and the traveller’s leans another, and neither is the true now, then events you file under still to come are already someone else’s present—and if they are present for her, they are as settled as anything already is. This is the quiet death of presentism, the common-sense faith that only this moment is real: push relativity all the way and the future stops being open, the past stops being gone. Everything—the fly’s escape, your birth, your death, the burning-out of the last star—exists together in a single four-dimensional block, complete and changeless. Physicists call this eternalism. (A gentler middle picture, the growing block, lets the past be real and the future stay genuinely open—but it needs exactly the universal now that relativity forbids.) Much of modern physics leans toward the block, though the argument has never closed. It is an old philosopher’s dream turned to stone. In 1908 J. M. E. McTaggart split time in two: an A-series, where events are past, present or future and the now slides forward, and a B-series, where they merely sit in fixed order, this before that, always. Genuine passage, he argued, needs the A-series—and the A-series is a contradiction, since every event has to be future and present and past. So much the worse, he concluded, for time. The block universe is his B-series with the lights on: an order, a before and an after, and nowhere a now that moves.

Spacetime as one changeless slab: a single wavy worldline threading past to future, crossed by three tilted planes of simultaneity—the nows of three observers who will never agree on where the present lies.

The Arrow Nobody Built

The block, though, is too still to be the whole truth, because something in our world plainly points one way. Cream stirred into coffee never unstirs. Cups shatter and never leap back whole. We remember the past and not the future. Here is the scandal under the floor of physics: not one of the fundamental laws accounts for any of it. Newton’s mechanics, Maxwell’s fields, Einstein’s gravity, the machinery of quantum theory—run them backwards, trade future for past, and every one holds up perfectly. A collision of atoms played in reverse is exactly as lawful as the same collision played forward. (There is one vanishingly small exception, buried in the decay of certain particles, and it does nothing to explain why your coffee cools.) The laws do not care which way time points. The man who found where the direction hides was Ludwig Boltzmann, in the 1870s, and his answer was that the arrow is not a law at all but a landslide of odds. Entropy, his great idea, is really a count: for every tidy arrangement there are unimaginably many untidy ones, so a system left alone slides from the ordered toward the jumbled—not because it must, but because unmixing is like shuffling a deck into perfect order by luck. He cut the heart of it into one line, S = k log W, now carved on his gravestone in Vienna, and it runs the same forwards or back.

Which means the true mystery runs the other way. It was never why the future is messier than the present—odds see to that. It is why the past was ever so preposterously tidy. Trace the order backward—the cup unshatters, the galaxy ungathers, the cream unmixes—and you arrive at a beginning of almost unbelievable smoothness: a Big Bang in a state of fantastically low entropy, the most ordered the universe would ever be. The philosopher David Albert gave this bare starting condition a name, the Past Hypothesis, and nearly everything we mean by the passing of time hangs from it. Memory, cause before effect, growing old, the plain sense that the past is fixed while the future is open—every arrow you have ever felt is the long shadow of that one improbable dawn. The universe is not so much running down toward disorder as still falling away from an order it began with and will never wear again.

The arrow of time is not written in the laws. It is written in the beginning.

The Equation With No Time In It

Go down one level further, to where physicists strain to weld quantum theory to gravity, and time does not just lose its arrow—it thins out until it is gone. In the best-known equation of quantum cosmology, the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, there is no variable for time; the quantum state of the universe simply is, with nothing to tick against. Carlo Rovelli has spent a career here, and his verdict, in The Order of Time, is that time is not a basic ingredient of the world but something that surfaces, like warmth, only when we squint. What we feel as the flow is thermal—a by-product of our blurred, coarse-grained view, the very haze that entropy counts. Julian Barbour pulls the last thread: there is no time at all, only a vast still heap of Nows, each a frozen snapshot of everything, holding within it what look like traces of a past. There is no river—only a stack of photographs we are somehow sure is a film. The man who set all this going had already made his peace with it. In March 1955 Einstein’s oldest friend, Michele Besso, died; Einstein, himself weeks from the end, wrote to comfort the family, and let fall a sentence that has haunted everyone who has read it—half condolence, half confession of faith.

But Something Flows

It is a magnificent sentence, and I do not quite believe it—or rather, illusion is the wrong word for the most vivid thing any of us will ever know. Before I say why, notice a strange rhyme. From the far side of the world, with utterly different instruments, the contemplatives have been reporting something adjacent for millennia. The sages of Vedanta spoke of a timeless ground beneath the turning world, an eternal present in which past and future are only appearances; Buddhist practice returns, again and again, to the bare now, until the flow reveals itself as a thing the mind is doing. Sit still enough, they say, and the sense of time streaming past falls quiet. I will not pretend the physics proves the meditators right, or the reverse—that conflation cheapens both. Yet it should stop us that the equations and the mystics, from opposite ends of everything, converge on the same unlikely place: that the flowing now, the one thing we were surest of, is exactly the thing that is not fundamentally there.

So here is where I put down my flag. The flow of time is real—only not in the place we kept searching for it. It is real the way colour is real. There is no redness loose in the world; there is light of a certain wavelength, and an eye and a brain that turn that wavelength into the private, undeniable experience of red. You would not call red an illusion because physics finds only wavelengths out there; red is simply what happens when that world meets that kind of observer. Time is the same. The block does not flow; the equations hold no now. But drop into that block a creature that remembers one direction and not the other, rides the entropy gradient set going at the low-entropy dawn, and reads the world through a narrow travelling slot it calls the present—and for that creature, unavoidably, time flows. Passage is not a feature of the universe. It is a relationship between the universe and a mind reading it from the inside.

The Length of a Moment

And if time is a relationship, its grain depends on the mind at one end of it—which is where felt time turns genuinely strange. Take the oldest report of all: in a crash or a fall or a sudden fright, the world drops into slow motion and the seconds stretch. David Eagleman tested it. He dropped volunteers backwards off a tower into a net far below—real free fall, real terror—each wearing a device that flashed numbers a hair too fast to read—catchable only by genuinely quickened sight. Plummeting, frightened, they still could not read it. Yet afterward they swore their own fall had lasted a full third longer than their friends’. The slow motion was real—but it had not happened in the moment; it was laid down afterward, by a brain recording so densely that the stretch shows up only in the remembering. Fear does not slow the clock; it thickens the record. The same trick runs the other puzzle of felt time—why a childhood summer lasted a geological age while a year at fifty is gone before you learn to write the date. In 1877 Paul Janet caught part of it: each year is a smaller slice of the life so far—a tenth to a child of ten, a fiftieth at fifty. But most of it is novelty—the child meets a world entirely new, and newness burns memory bright, while the adult’s days fold into routine until a year with nothing new in it leaves almost no trace.

Push the clock speed well past the human, though, and you leave memory behind for something more basic still: the raw rate at which a nervous system samples the world. There is even a number for it, the critical flicker fusion threshold—the speed at which a blinking light smears into a steady glow. Below your threshold you see flicker; above it the world fuses into seamless continuity, the way a reel of stills becomes a moving picture. For us it sits near sixty flashes a second. For a dog, nearer eighty. For a housefly, perhaps two hundred and fifty—which is why your descending hand, a blur to you, unfurls before it like a slow grey tide, each instant drawn out across what for you is a fraction of a blink. In 2013 the biologist Kevin Healy showed that this holds right across the animal kingdom: the smaller the creature and the faster it burns, the finer it slices time. Hawks, swifts, squirrels, flies—small hot metabolisms living in a real and measurable slow motion; and, at the placid far end, a leatherback turtle down near fifteen. (Honesty demands a caveat: flicker fusion measures how fast the eye samples, not how long a second feels. But it is the clearest window we have onto the thought that a moment is not one fixed size.)

The same interval, three ways: a fly’s second sliced into hundreds of moments, a human’s into dozens, a slow cold mind’s into a handful—one length of time, carved by each nervous system into a different number of nows.

Which brings the whole essay to the question it has been circling. Is a second the same length for a hummingbird, a human, and a machine? Pressed for a ruling, the universe offers only a bureaucrat’s answer. The official second is defined as exactly 9,192,631,770 swings of a caesium atom—a figure chosen precisely because no living pulse could be trusted to keep it. But that is a ruler we agreed on, not a second anyone lives inside. And even the ruler will not hold still: raise one atomic clock a single foot above another and the higher one, sitting in fractionally weaker gravity, ticks measurably faster—the difference has now been read across a single millimetre of height. There is no master clock the cosmos keeps. So picture a mind of silicon running a million steps for each one of yours. A minute of our talk would open before it like a long afternoon; a human century, seen from its side, might flick past like an idle thought. It would not be alive any longer or shorter than we are. It would be living inside a second of another size—as foreign to ours as the fly’s, and every bit as full.

Where That Leaves Us

So come back, finally, to the fly on the rim of the glass. Everything the physics dismantled is still gone. There is no universal now the two of you share, no flow in the equations ruling the air between you, no clock anywhere that owns the true rate of things. And still—there you both are, lodged in the same motionless block of spacetime, each reading the frozen world through a moving slot of present, yours wide and unhurried, its narrow and quick, each of you wholly certain that your now is the now, that time is pouring past at exactly the rate it obviously pours. You are both right. You are both making it. The flow was never out in the world to be found. It was the sound of a mind moving through what does not move.

That is not a smaller world than the one you thought you were living in. It is a stranger and a wider one. It means the present you stand in is not a single tide carrying all things forward together, but something nearer to a signature—the particular size of moment your particular mind cuts out of an eternity that is simply, timelessly there. It means the dead have not gone nowhere; their stretch of the block is as real as the stretch you are standing on, which may be just what Einstein was reaching toward as he consoled his friend’s family and made ready to become past tense himself. And it means that the next time you go quiet enough—watching a single breath, or the light leaving a room—and feel the streaming falter, just for an instant, you are not losing time. You are seeing, for a moment, behind it: the whole of it at once, motionless, the way it was before you began to move and gave that motion the name of now.
