Invented Tongues and Borrowed Futures: How Imagination Builds Worlds and Where Its Ideas Come From
A philologist invents an elvish word and has to build a world for it to be spoken in; a physicist sketches a satellite that will not exist for two decades. Both are doing the same impossible thing—drawing the not-yet into language so the world can later catch up to it.
Before there was a Shire, there was a word. Sometime around the First World War, a young philologist sat inventing a language for the pleasure of it—not a code, not a cipher, but a tongue with its own sound-laws and tenses and the slow rust of sound-change worn into it, the way real languages carry their own history like grain in wood. He called one of them Quenya. And then he ran into a problem that would consume the rest of his life: a language is not a list. It is the residue of a people. Words mean nothing unless someone has lived in them—mourned in them, sworn oaths in them, named their rivers and their dead. So to make the language real he had to invent the speakers, and to house the speakers he had to invent a world, and the world, once it began to turn, demanded a history, a geography, a fall. Tolkien said it plainly, later, in a letter: the stories were made rather to provide a world for the languages than the reverse. The map of Middle-earth is, at bottom, scaffolding erected around a beautiful sentence nobody had yet had occasion to say.
This is stranger than it sounds, and it is the hinge on which this whole essay turns. We usually imagine the writer starting with a story and reaching for words to tell it. Tolkien reversed the order. He started with the words and let them generate the story they would need to be true. He had a name for what he was doing—sub-creation—and it carries a quiet theological charge. We are, he thought, made in the image of a Maker, and so we make in turn; the small worlds we build are not lies competing with the real one but acts of homage to the faculty that built us. The world inside the book he called the Secondary World, and the test of it was not whether you believed it the way you believe a fact, but whether, while you were inside, your mind moved through it without stumbling—whether it held.
And the astonishing thing is how much it can be made to hold. A single human imagination, sitting at a desk, can generate a place with the texture of a real one: not just a plot but an ecology, a politics, a thousand years of grudges, songs whose tunes we never hear but whose existence we somehow trust. The depth is not decoration. It is the difference between a stage flat and a window. When the depth is real—when the author knows what is over the next hill even though the story never goes there—the reader feels it as a kind of pressure behind the page, the way you can sense a room is large before the lights come up.
How does one mind do this? Partly by obeying a discipline that looks, from outside, like the opposite of fantasy: relentless internal consistency. The trick of a convincing invented world is not unlimited freedom but self-imposed law. Magic that can do anything is boring, because nothing it does costs anything. Ursula K. Le Guin understood this better than almost anyone; in her Earthsea, magic is a matter of knowing the true name of a thing, and to work it you must know the precise price, because every act of power disturbs a balance that will demand to be paid. Frank Herbert built Dune not around a hero but around an ecosystem—the water-discipline of the Fremen, the slow terraforming of a desert planet, the spice that warps both economy and mind—so that the politics feels less invented than grown. Steven Erikson, an archaeologist by training, poured into the Malazan world the disorienting depth of a real dig: you arrive mid-history, among ruins and references to wars already lost, and the ground gives way beneath you precisely because the author refused to explain it all. The consistency is what lets the imagination travel. A world with rules is a world you can think inside.
Not every writer begins with the language. George R.R. Martin built Westeros first—its houses and betrayals and the long winter coming—and the Dothraki and Valyrian tongues you hear in its adaptation were largely constructed afterward, by the conlanger David J. Peterson, working from the scattered words Martin had strewn through the books and extrapolating an entire grammar to fit. It is the Tolkien process run backward: world first, then the language summoned to make it audible. But the instinct is identical. Both writers knew that a world without its own speech is a world seen through glass. Language is the proof that someone lives there.
A world with rules is a world you can think inside. The consistency is not a cage. It is what lets the imagination travel.
Which raises the harder question—the one a sensible person asks about all of this. What is it for? Why should a serious adult spend their hours among elves and sandworms and invented declensions when the actual world is on fire? Tolkien met this charge head-on, because it was leveled at him directly, and his answer is the most bracing defence of fantasy ever written. The sneer hidden in the word escapism, he argued, confuses two very different acts: the flight of the deserter and the escape of the prisoner. If a man is in jail, we do not despise him for thinking about, and talking about, anything other than jailers and prison walls. To call him a coward for it is to side with the jail. Fantasy is not a refusal of the real. It is, at its best, a refusal of the diminished—a way of looking back at the ordinary world and seeing it freshly, the green of grass and the strangeness of bread restored to a mind that had gone numb to them.
Here is the honest turn, though, because the case can be overstated and often is. Not all of it is re-vision; some of it really is the deserter’s flight, and we should say so. There is a kind of immersion that does not send you back to the world clarified but keeps you from the world entirely—the endless series consumed to avoid a life, the secondary world preferred precisely because it asks nothing of you. The faculty that lets us rehearse courage can also let us rehearse avoidance. What separates the two is not the elves. It is whether the imagined world hands you something to carry back across the threshold. The good invented world is a loan, not a residence. You are meant to return, and to return changed.
When it works, what it hands back is rehearsal. We read about loss in order to practise it before the real loss comes; we follow a small frightened person carrying an unbearable burden toward a mountain because we, too, will someday carry something we did not ask for and cannot put down. Tolkien gave the consolation of the happy ending its own ungainly, exact name: eucatastrophe, the good catastrophe, the sudden turn when all seems lost and grace breaks in anyway—not a denial that the dragon is real, but the piercing, against-the-evidence intuition that defeat is not final. He thought this joy was not escapist sentiment but a glimpse of something true about the structure of things. Whether or not he was right about the cosmos, he was right about us. A species that could not imagine the turn would not have the nerve to keep walking toward the mountain.
Now turn the telescope around. If high fantasy is imagination building worlds that will never be, science fiction is imagination building worlds that keep, unnervingly, arriving. In October 1945, an RAF radar officer named Arthur C. Clarke published a short technical paper in Wireless World working out something nobody had built: place three relay stations in orbit at roughly thirty-six thousand kilometres, where a satellite circles in exactly the time the Earth turns beneath it, and they will hang motionless over fixed points on the ground and blanket the whole planet in radio. He described the geostationary communications satellite two decades before one flew. He did not patent it. The ring of orbit where they now sit, hundreds of them, carrying the voice and the video and the data of the species, is called the Clarke Belt. A man imagined it precisely, in words and numbers, and the world spent twenty years catching up to the sentence.
The pattern repeats so often it stops looking like coincidence. Jules Verne, in the nineteenth century, sent men under the sea in an electric submarine and shot them at the Moon from a launch site in Florida, a continent’s accuracy ahead of Apollo. Isaac Asimov, troubled by the ethics of minds we might build, wrote his robots around three governing laws and spent decades dramatising how such laws would fail at their edges—and the entire modern argument about machine alignment, about how to bind an intelligence to human ends, is recognisably his argument, still unresolved. William Gibson, who barely used a computer, looked at kids hunched over arcade games and intuited a place behind the screen; in 1984 he gave it a name—cyberspace—and we have been living inside his coinage ever since. The flip-open communicator that Star Trek put in a crewman’s hand became, near enough, the phone in yours; the engineers who built the first one have said so out loud.
Clarke tried to state the law behind his own foresight. His three laws are half-joking and entirely serious. The first: when a distinguished but elderly scientist says something is possible, he is almost certainly right; when he says it is impossible, he is very probably wrong. The second is the one that matters here.

Venture past them into the impossible. That is the whole motion—of the conlanger and the satellite engineer alike. And it forces the deep question this essay has been circling, the one that turns a literary observation into a metaphysical one. Where do these thoughts come from? When Clarke imagined the orbit, or Tolkien the word, or Gibson the matrix—were they inventing something out of nothing, or were they finding something that, in some hard-to-state sense, was already there to be found? And the stranger possibility behind even that: is the thought the precursor to the thing—does imagining, by some process we only half understand, run ahead of reality and lay down the track the real then travels?
Philosophy has been arguing this for two and a half thousand years, and the oldest position is also the most vertiginous. Plato held that what we call ideas are not manufactured by the mind but discovered by it—that beyond the shifting world of particular things lies a realm of Forms, perfect and eternal, of which every actual horse and every actual act of justice is a flawed copy. On this view the inventor invents nothing. The triangle, the just city, perhaps even the elvish word, waits in a kind of eternal warehouse, and genius is only the clarity of sight that reaches it. It sounds like mysticism until you notice that working mathematicians talk this way without embarrassment. Ask one whether they invented their theorem or found it, and most will say, a little sheepishly, that it felt like finding—that the prime numbers were there before anyone counted, that pi does not care whether we exist. Mathematical Platonism is the respectable ghost of Plato’s warehouse, and it haunts the most rigorous discipline we have.
Coleridge, writing in 1817, drew the distinction that lets us talk about the writer specifically. He split the imagination in two. The primary Imagination he called the living power of all human perception—the unnoticed daily miracle by which a chaos of sensation becomes a world of objects, a repetition in the finite mind of the eternal act of creation. The secondary Imagination is the artist’s deliberate version of that same power: it dissolves the given world in order to re-create it, to build the Secondary World Tolkien would later name. And to enter such a world the reader supplies what Coleridge called the willing suspension of disbelief—not gullibility, but a chosen, temporary faith that lets the made thing live. The maker and the reader are partners in a single act of creation, lending the unreal just enough belief to make it work on us.
But it was a twentieth-century philosopher of science who gave the idea its most usable shape. Karl Popper proposed that reality has three storeys. World 1 is the physical—stars, bodies, brains. World 2 is the mental—our private experiences, the felt inside of a mind. And World 3, his radical addition, is the world of the objective contents of thought: theories, problems, arguments, stories, numbers—the products of mind that, once made, take on a life independent of any maker. A theorem has consequences no one foresaw and no one can wish away. A story can contain meanings its author never intended. World 3 is real, Popper insisted, and it acts back on World 1 through us: an idea, born in a mind, lodged in a journal or a novel, reaches out and rebuilds the physical world in its image. Clarke’s orbit was a World 3 object for twenty years before it became a World 1 object. The satellite is the idea, having borrowed our hands.
The satellite was a thought before it was a thing. The species dreams in advance, and the world spends years catching up to the sentence.
And beneath even Popper runs a darker, older current. Jung looked at the dreams and myths of people who could not have shared them and concluded that the deep imagination is not wholly private—that beneath the personal mind lies a collective unconscious stocked with archetypes, inherited patterns that surface again and again in the stories of unrelated peoples. The wise old man, the shadow, the hero descending into the dark and returning with a boon: these are not learned but remembered, he thought, the way a riverbed remembers water. It is why the deepest invented worlds feel less invented than recognised—why a hobbit’s journey rhymes with myths its author could not have read. The writer reaching into the imagination may be reaching, in part, into a common room we all inherit and none of us furnished.
Set these beside each other—Plato’s Forms, Coleridge’s two imaginations, Popper’s World 3, Jung’s archetypes, the mathematician’s stubborn sense of finding rather than making—and a single suspicion gathers across all of them. Imagination may not be the mind’s decoration. It may be its forward edge: the organ by which the merely possible is dredged up, given a shape in language, and made available for the world to realise. Fiction, on this reading, is not a holiday from reality but a pre-enactment of it—the way a species runs simulations of its futures before it has to live them, testing courage and catastrophe and the ethics of the minds it has not yet built, in the cheap and survivable theatre of the page.
Which collapses the distance between the two halves of this essay. The philologist inventing a word for a people who never lived and the physicist sketching an orbit for a satellite not yet built were not doing opposite things. They were doing the same thing. Both reached past the edge of the actual and drew something back across it in words—the only net we have for catching what does not yet exist. Tolkien’s elvish never became metal and silicon; Clarke’s belt did. But the motion that produced them is identical, and it is the most consequential motion our species performs. We imagine, and then—slowly, unevenly, across years or never—the world bends to meet the imagining. The future arrives already named, because someone had the nerve to say it first. That is not escape. That is how the possible becomes actual: a thought, drawn into a sentence, waiting with great patience for reality to catch up.
