The Wheels That Were Never Coloured

Seven discs up the spine, red to violet. It is on every studio wall and in every introductory book, and not one of those colours appears in the Sanskrit sources. What the texts actually describe is stranger, older and far more interesting than the chart—and the honest science underneath it is not the science usually offered.

You know the picture. Seven discs stacked up the midline of a seated figure, running red at the base to violet at the crown, each with a Sanskrit name, a gland, a note of the scale and a virtue. It is on the wall of every yoga studio and the first page of every introductory book, and it is presented as very old.

It is not. Not one of those seven colours appears in that order in any Sanskrit source. The rainbow is younger than the electric guitar, and tracing where it came from turns out to be a good way into what the tradition was actually doing—which is stranger, more sophisticated, and considerably harder to put on a poster.

One Text, Very Late

Almost everything modern rests on a single work. The Ṣaṭ-cakra-nirūpaṇa—“description of the six wheels”—is the sixth chapter of the Śrītattvacintāmaṇi, composed by Pūrṇānanda in 1577. In 1918 John Woodroffe, a judge of the Calcutta High Court writing as Arthur Avalon, translated it along with Kālīcaraṇa’s commentary and published it as The Serpent Power.

That book is the hinge. Nearly every Western account of the chakras descends from it, usually at several removes, usually without knowing it. And it is worth registering the date: 1577 is not ancient. It is contemporary with Akbar, with Palladio, with the first performance of Shakespeare. Yoga is far older than this text; the specific six-plus-one scheme everybody recites is not.

Before That, Nothing Agreed

Go back before 1577 and the systems multiply alarmingly. The Sanskritist Alexis Sanderson’s summary of what the tantric literature contains is worth having in full flavour: six seasons, five knots, five voids, nine wheels, eleven wheels, twelve knots, several different sets of sixteen loci, twenty-eight vital points. The number of centres is not a fact about the body. It is a feature of a lineage.

The earliest text known to teach six points all called cakras is the Netratantra, from around 800 to 850 CE—and its six have different names in different places: at the genitals, the navel, the heart, the palate, the forehead, and a point of resonance above. Nothing in that list would be recognised by anyone holding the modern chart.

The scheme that eventually won appears first in the Kubjikāmatatantra, around the tenth century: mūlādhāra at the perineum, svādhiṣṭhāna at the genitals, maṇipūra at the navel, anāhata at the heart, viśuddhi at the throat, ājñā between the brows. Recognisable at last. But look at what it says about the petals. It gives anāhata ten and maṇipūra twelve—the reverse of what everyone now recites. The numbers people take as the fixed anatomy of the subtle body were still being swapped around five hundred years after the system’s first appearance.

Elsewhere in the same literature: the Kaulajñānanirṇaya teaches eleven cakras, with petal counts running to a hundred and then a hundred thousand. The Buddhist Hevajratantra has four, with sixty-four petals at the navel and thirty-two at the head. A later Nāth text has nine. And in some chapters of the Kubjikāmata itself the system quietly becomes five. The variation is not between traditions. It is within single texts.

What They Were Actually For

Once you stop expecting the chakras to be organs, the variation stops being a problem and starts being the answer. The scholarly formulation, from Mallinson and Singleton, is precise and worth taking slowly: the cakras are not the result of the yogi’s empirical observation but parts of a visualised installation, onto the body, of a particular tradition’s metaphysics and ritual scheme.

The technical name for the operation is nyāsa—installation. You place mantras and deities at specified points of the body, by visualising them there, and by doing so you make the body into a ritual instrument. In text after text from the ninth century onwards, the yogi is not told to *find* the cakras. He is told to imagine them, in passages that are explicitly about meditation.

The clinching detail is small and, once noticed, decisive. One tantric compendium provides that a practitioner who cannot manage the internal meditation on the cakras may perform an external worship instead—the same rite, done outside the body. If the cakras were anatomical structures, that substitution would be incoherent. As a visualisation scaffold it is merely a concession to the beginner.

The tradition never claimed these were organs. It said, repeatedly and in writing, that you were building them.

So What Colour Are They?

Here the 1577 text is specific, and it specifies something the modern chart cannot represent, because the petals and the interior are different colours.

At mūlādhāra the petals are crimson, and inside sits a square—the region of earth—described as a shining yellow, beautiful like lightning. At svādhiṣṭhāna the petals are vermilion and the interior is a white half-moon, the region of water. At maṇipūra the petals are the colour of heavy rain-clouds and the interior is a triangle of fire, shining like the rising sun. At anāhata the petals are the deep red of the bandhūka flower and the interior is a six-cornered figure the colour of smoke. At viśuddha the petals are smoky purple around a white circle like the moon. At ājñā the petals are moon-white, with a form inside that shines like lightning. And the sahasrāra is whiter than the full moon, its filaments tinged with the colour of the young sun.

And then there is a text that removes the question altogether. The Kaulajñānanirṇaya instructs the practitioner to visualise the lotus in whatever colour the rite requires: red for subjugation, yellow for stunning, grey for driving away, white for nurturing and pacification, white as a stream of milk for defeating death, the colour of molten gold to shake cities.

Colour, in that text, is a dial. It is set by what you are trying to do. It is not a property the centre possesses and it could not possibly be a fixed spectrum, because it is an instruction, not a description.

Where the Rainbow Actually Came From

The usual answer is Charles Leadbeater’s The Chakras, published by the Theosophical Society in 1927. I went to check, and the usual answer is wrong.

Leadbeater’s colours are nothing like a rainbow. His root centre is a fiery orange-red. His third is a blend of reds and greens. His heart is glowing gold. His throat is silvery, like moonlight on rippling water. His brow is half rose and yellow, half purplish-blue. He also replaces svādhiṣṭhāna with a “splenic” centre and gives his brow and crown ninety-six and nine hundred and seventy-two spokes, where the Sanskrit gives two and a thousand. Whatever Leadbeater was describing, it was not a transmission and it was not the modern chart.

The rainbow is later, and Western, and specific. It was assembled in the late 1960s and 1970s, when the colour-healing tradition’s spectrum was welded onto the Theosophical list of chakra qualities and the human-potential movement’s psychology. Christopher Hills’s Nuclear Evolution (1968) was reissued in 1977 with the subtitle Discovery of the Rainbow Body; Ken Dychtwald’s work the same year joined the rainbow to the endocrine glands. The Theosophical Society’s own magazine has published the history, and it does not claim the credit.

So the chart on the studio wall is roughly fifty years old, was made in California, and is presented as five thousand. I do not think that makes it worthless—a mnemonic that helps people attend to their own bodies is doing something. But it should not be sold as antiquity, and the thing it replaced was better.

The Number That Gives the Game Away

Count the petals in the 1577 text: four, six, ten, twelve, sixteen, two. Fifty.

Which is exactly the number of letters in the Sanskrit alphabet, and the text assigns them accordingly—four syllables on the base lotus, six on the next, ten, twelve, then the sixteen vowels at the throat, and the last two at the brow. Woodroffe notes it flatly: this exhausts the fifty letters. In the pericarp of the brow lotus sits Oṃ, and above, in the thousand-petalled lotus, the fifty run twenty times over.

The fifty letters are the mātṛkā—the “little mothers,” the phonemes out of which, in this metaphysics, the manifest world is spoken into being. Which means the column of wheels is not a diagram of the nervous system at all. It is a map of language, laid along the spine. The body is being used as a filing system for the sounds that make the cosmos, so that the practitioner can install them one at a time and then travel back up through them.

Read that way, the whole apparatus snaps into focus, and every question about which nerve corresponds to which lotus reveals itself as a category error committed with good intentions.

Śiva, Śakti, and What Is Rising

The coiled power at the base is a later arrival than people assume. The earliest description of a “primordial coil” puts her in the heart, not the perineum. The serpent form appears first in an eighth-century tantra. Only afterwards does the familiar story settle: Śakti asleep at the root, waking, straightening, rising along the central channel, piercing the knots, and dissolving at the crown into Śiva.

The doctrinal content is worth stating carefully, because it is usually rendered as a romance and it is not one. In the non-dual Śaiva traditions, Śiva is consciousness and Śakti is consciousness’s own power to appear as a world. They are not two beings who unite. They are one thing described from two sides—the light, and the light’s awareness of itself. Abhinavagupta distinguishes three kuṇḍalinīs, from the breath through the power of creation to the supreme goddess herself, which tells you the term is doing work at several levels at once.

And the ascent has a specific meaning that the popular version loses. As she rises through centres associated with progressively subtler elements—earth, water, fire, air, ether—creation is being resorbed in reverse. The yogi is not climbing a ladder of virtues. He is running cosmogony backwards, unmaking the world in the order it was made, until there is nothing left to unmake.

The Thousand Names, and What They Actually Say

The Lalitā Sahasranāma—the thousand names of the goddess Lalitā Tripurasundarī—sits in the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa as a dialogue between Hayagrīva and the sage Agastya. Its structure is exact: fifty-one introductory verses, one hundred and eighty-two and a half verses of names, eighty-six and a half of conclusion. The text says the names were composed by the goddesses of speech, headed by Vaśinī, at the Devī’s own command—and Bhāskararāya, its great commentator, adds the point of the commission: in the other hymns, the secret of the Cakra is not revealed.

The ascent is there, and it is not where most summaries put it. It runs across nāmas 99 to 111, and it is not a tour of seven centres. It is a piercing of three knots.

99, mūlādhāraika-nilayā—she whose one abode is the root. 100, brahma-granthi-vibhedinīshe who splits the knot of Brahmā. 101, maṇipūrāntar-uditā—risen within the navel lotus. 102, viṣṇu-granthi-vibhedinī—she who splits the knot of Viṣṇu. 103, ājñā-cakrāntarālasthā—standing within the command wheel. 104, rudra-granthi-vibhedinī—she who splits the knot of Rudra. 105, sahasrārāmbujārūḍhā—mounted on the thousand-petalled lotus. Then 106, raining down streams of nectar; 107, radiant as a streak of lightning; 108, abiding above the six wheels. At 110 she is simply named kuṇḍalinī, and at 111, bisa-tantu-tanīyasī—finer than the fibre of a lotus stalk.

Notice the shape. Three names for places, three for knots, alternating. The obstacles are named as often as the stations, which is a rather different emphasis from a chart of seven glowing discs.

The text has a second sequence for the same seven places, several hundred names later, and it runs the other way—from the throat downwards to the root, then up to the brow and the crown, each governed by a presiding yoginī, the whole run ordered by an acrostic of seven syllables. Two different orderings of the same seven locations, in one text, because they are doing two different ritual jobs. That is the clearest evidence available that these are instruments rather than anatomy.

That is the nine hundred and ninety-ninth name, one before the last. After a thousand epithets—throne, city, weapon, sound, nectar, wheel—the text arrives at the only claim that matters to its own metaphysics, and then closes by calling her simply the mother.

Now: Is There Anything Underneath It?

This is the question everyone asks, and it is usually answered badly in both directions. So let me take the standard bridge first, because it fails in an instructive way.

The chakras-are-nerve-plexuses idea is not traditional and not Indian in origin in the sense usually implied. It was proposed in the early twentieth century by Bengali scholars—Benoy Kumar Sarkar and Brajendranath Seal among them—working to demonstrate that Hindu science had anticipated European anatomy. They matched the base to the sacro-coccygeal plexus, the next to the sacral, the navel to the solar plexus, and so on, and where the petal counts did not fit they counted branches until they did.

And here is the detail that ought to be much better known. Woodroffe himself rejected it—in the very book that made the chakras famous. He states plainly that the lotuses are in the spinal column, in the suṣumṇā, and not in the nerve plexuses that surround it; and he points out that the crown centre cannot be the medulla for the simple reason that the medulla sits below the brow centre, not above it. The translator everyone inherited the system from thought the anatomical mapping was a mistake, and said so, and was ignored.

So what is real? Rather a lot, as it happens, but none of it is a wheel.

The gut genuinely does contain its own nervous system—between two and six hundred million neurons, in thousands of small ganglia, more than the whole of the rest of the peripheral autonomic nervous system. The vagus nerve is genuinely not what people think it is: roughly four-fifths of its fibres are afferent, carrying information upward. It is mostly a sensory nerve reporting on the interior, not a control cable reaching down into it.

And there is a research programme, interoception, devoted to how the brain builds and uses a map of its own internal condition. A. D. Craig’s work located a re-representation of bodily state in the anterior insula and argued it constitutes something like a representation of the material self—a candidate foundation for feelings and self-awareness. A large consensus paper describes interoception as a moment-by-moment mapping of the body’s internal landscape, running below awareness as well as within it.

One caution, because it is the story most often welded onto this material. Polyvagal theory should not be used as the bridge. In 2026 an international expert evaluation with thirty-nine co-authors—essentially the relevant field, invited without exception—concluded that its major tenets are not supported and that the theory is untenable. Whatever the traditional practices are doing, that is not the account of it.

The Bridge That Actually Holds

The serious analogue comes from predictive processing, and it is worth stating properly because it is genuinely interesting.

On the interoceptive-inference account developed by Anil Seth and Karl Friston, the brain does not passively read the body. It runs a generative model of what the body’s internal states should be, and the autonomic reflexes that regulate heart rate, breathing and gut are driven by predictions descending from that model. Feeling, on this view, is not a readout. It is inference.

Which gives you a defensible reading of the whole practice. Sustained, structured attention to specified regions of the interior, held with a symbolic scaffold that tells you what to expect there, is a way of modulating a generative model of your own body. That is not mysticism; it is a description of what the intervention would be doing, in terms a physiologist can work with. And it explains why the details of the scaffold vary so wildly between lineages while the practice keeps working: the scaffold’s job is to organise attention, and many scaffolds can do that.

The supporting evidence is real but thinner than enthusiasts suggest. Experienced meditators show relative deactivation of the brain’s default-mode hubs across meditation types. Slow breathing below ten breaths a minute reliably raises heart-rate variability and shifts the EEG, though the systematic review that established it found only fifteen of two thousand four hundred and sixty-one screened studies good enough to include. And where heart-rate variability biofeedback works, the best-supported mechanism is the baroreflex—a specific, boring, well-understood loop—rather than anything requiring a new physiology.

It should also be said that the tradition’s warnings were not decorative. The most careful study of meditation-related difficulty catalogued fifty-nine kinds of adverse experience across seven domains, with the somatic ones ranging from transient to severe and enduring. That is exactly the territory the classical literature calls a kuṇḍalinī crisis. There is no controlled research on it at all—but the phenomenon is documented, and the old texts were not being melodramatic when they insisted on a teacher.

The Frequencies, Since Everyone Asks

There is a table circulating that assigns each chakra a frequency in hertz—194.18 for the root, and so on up. It comes from a Swiss musicologist, Hans Cousto, who in 1978 proposed that the periods of astronomical motions could be doubled into the audible range. He was explicit about what he was doing; it was his own idea, and he said so.

You can check the root note yourself in one line. A mean solar day is 86,400 seconds. Double that frequency twenty-four times—that is, take two to the twenty-fourth and divide—and you get 194.18 hertz. It is the Earth’s rotation, transposed. It is a nice idea and it has no connection whatever to any Sanskrit source, in which the seed sounds are syllables, not pitches.

The related “solfeggio” numbers—528 and the rest—come from a 1999 book and were produced by numerological digit-reduction rather than measurement.

Why colour and pitch cannot be the same scale. Everything audible sits between about 20 hertz and 20 kilohertz; everything visible sits around four hundred million million hertz. Between the top of hearing and the bottom of vision lie roughly thirty-four doublings of frequency. And the detail that settles it: the entire visible spectrum, red to violet, spans less than one doubling. A rainbow cannot be a seven-note scale transposed upward, because the whole rainbow is not even one octave wide.

The arithmetic on the right of that figure is worth dwelling on because it is decisive and almost never stated. The whole rainbow is 0.98 of an octave. Red to violet is not a scale; it is less than the interval from one note to the same note higher. Any scheme mapping seven musical steps onto seven colours has misunderstood what an octave is.

And even Cousto’s own transposition only lands where it does because you get to choose how many doublings to apply. Take his root frequency up forty-one octaves and you arrive at deep red, at the extreme edge of vision. Forty and you are in the infrared. Forty-two and you are in the ultraviolet. There is no principled reason for forty-one, which means the correspondence is not being discovered. It is being arranged.

There is also a category error underneath the whole exercise. Sound is a pressure wave in a material medium; light is an electromagnetic field. “Frequency” is the same word for two physically unrelated quantities. Transposing between them is a pun, and puns are not physics.

What Is Left, and It Is Not Nothing

Strip out the rainbow, the plexuses and the hertz, and what remains is a technique that a thousand years of practitioners refined, described in enormous detail, and were completely honest about. They did not say the wheels were organs. They said the wheels were to be visualised, that different lineages placed different numbers of them in different places, that their colours were chosen according to purpose, and that the whole apparatus was a way of installing sound and attention into a body until the body became something you could travel through.

Everything added since—the spectrum, the glands, the frequencies—was added to make the practice respectable by tethering it to physics. Each addition makes a claim the tradition never made and the science does not support, and each one is easier to refute than the thing it was meant to defend. The practice did not need any of it.

What it did need, and always had, is the observation the modern research is slowly arriving at from the other direction: that the interior of the body is not simply sensed but constructed, continuously, by a mind that is guessing at it; and that a disciplined way of attending to that construction changes it. The Sanskrit for the goal is laya, dissolution—the coiled power going up through knots that are named after gods and are, in every account, the hardest part. Nobody who wrote that down thought it was about colours.
